陳進,出生於新竹香山的士紳家庭,為台灣第一位留日女畫家,亦是戰前臺灣著名畫家中唯一一位女性,常被視為「閨秀畫家的代表人物」。學生時期,受日本畫家鄉原古統啟蒙遠赴日本,19歲時考入東京女子美術學校(今女子美術大學)日本畫科,師承膠彩畫大師鏑木清方、伊東深水。1927年,陳進以〈姿〉、〈罌粟〉、〈朝〉三件膠彩作品,入選第一屆台展東洋畫部,並與林玉山、郭雪湖合稱「台展三少年」,更寫下九次入選帝展的輝煌紀錄。其對藝術的追求執著一生,繪畫風格高雅精緻,帶有寫實意識,並常展現大家閨秀之氣質,常以其細膩慧眼觀察自然萬象,再反映在畫筆之下,創作出許多經典之作,是台灣美術史上最重要的女性藝術家之一。
Born in a well-bred family at Xiangshan, Hsinchu, Chen Jin was one of the first female painter studying abroad at Japan as well as the only publicly-recognized woman artist in the Taiwan art circle prior to WWII. She was regarded as the representative of “lady painters.” During her studying years, Chen was inspired and encouraged by Japanese painter Gohara Koto (1887-1965) to seek advanced study in Japan, Age the age of 19, she was enrolled to Joshibi University of Art and Design (Now Tokyo Women's Academy of Fine Arts). With the major of Japanese painting, Chen studied with nihonga (Eastern Gouache) painting masters Kaburaki Kiyokata (1878-1972) and Ito Shinsui (1898-1972). In 1927, Chen’s three nihonga paintings “Gesture,” “the Poppy Flower,” and “the Morning” were selected into the division of Toyoga style (Japanese style) paintings of the first Taiwan Art Exhibition (Tâi-tián). She was widely recognized as “Three Young Talents from Tâi-tián” with Kuo, Hsueh-Hu and Lin, Yu-Shan and made the record of nine-time selecting into Teikoku Bijutsu Tenrankai or “Teiten.” Chen committed to persuade artistic career as a life-long mission. Her painting style is known to be elegant, sophisticated, and delicate with strong awareness of realism presentation. The tableau is often showing well-cultivated ladylike temperament. The artist always observed the nature and her surroundings with her keen and sensitive eyes and further projected her observation onto canvas. Chen created many classic works and is regarded as one of the most important female artists in the Taiwan fine art history.
